Ant and Dec score first No 1 single

Ant and Dec have reached number one in the charts for the first time ever - 17 years after their chart career as PJ and Duncan ended.

The pair soared to the top of the charts with their 1994 hit Let's Get Ready To Rhumble, which enjoyed a huge sales boost after they performed it on last weekend's Saturday Night Takeaway.

And they quickly took to their Twitter page to thank their fans after the news was revealed on Sunday's chart show.

"O M blummin' G!" they tweeted. "We're Number blummin' 1! Thank u! You're all nuts but we love! Cheers! #letsgetreadytorhumble."

The song originally reached number nine in 1994, and was one of a number of hits the pair notched up while performing as their Byker Grove alter-egos.

They admitted earlier this week they had not expected their performance to elicit such a strong response.

"We thought, well, we could possibly dust off the old baseball caps, and give it a go, for a laugh," Ant said during an appearance on Daybreak.

"The production team on Saturday Night Takeaway went mad, 'oh yeah, we remember that song, let's do it'."

Dec revealed: "We did a little bit of rehearsal on Thursday, we had four hours in our schedule, to rehearse the dance.

"We spent an hour, and it all came back to us. We've obviously done it so many times in the past."

All proceeds from sales of the track will be donated to Childline.
