Casualty's Ben: Jay completely goes for Lawrence!
Casualty's Ben Turner reveals Jay's struggle with his secret cancer hell... Jay returns to work this week after his orchidectomy. How does he explain his absence? "Jay pretends he's been on holiday in Spain! He's goes to the local supermarket and buys a sombrero and Spanish drinks in the hope he can pull the wool over everyone's eyes." Why doesn't he open up to his friends? "He's desperate to deal with the cancer on his own, but hiding it has become a big juggling act. He's very much struggling with the masculine element of his illness. In a way this storyline is about male pride. Also, I think Jay definitely sees himself as a family man in the future, so not knowing whether that will ever happen really messes with his head." What happens when his nan, Maryam, is admitted into the emergency department? "When Jay's nan is admitted, after a fall at her care home, Jay tries to keep up the pretence of being on holiday. But nana knows something is up! He feels really guilty because he can't care for her and has had to put her into a home." Is it this guilt coupled with the lies that causes him to lash out? "He really loves his nan and they only have each other. Lying to her has him on a knife-edge, and he's also treading water with work. The pressure he's under causes him to lose it." What happens? "Jay goes for Lawrence, the care worker, and accuses him of neglecting Maryam! He completely overreacts and acts out of character." What are the repercussions of his violent assault? "Jay is suspended and faces the sack, as it's a hard and fast rule you can never attack someone at work."
