Ex Casualty star Ben Turner relishes his new role in WPC 56

As staff nurse Jay Faldren, Ben Turner won the heart of career-oriented doctor Ruth Winters (Georgia Taylor) during his time in Casualty.

Will he do the same with colleague Gina Dawson (Jennie Jacques) in WPC 56, now he’s joined the cast of BBC1’s daytime drama?

Set in 1950s Birmingham, Ben stars as DI Max Harper, whose investigation into the murder of a town councillor puts him on the scent of dodgy businessman Lenny Powell, played by Michael Higgs (The Bill, Bad Girls, EastEnders).

The drama, which averaged 1.7 million viewers during its first series, focuses on the career of WPC Gina Dawson, the first woman police constable in her West Midlands hometown.

"I loved working on WPC. I'd always wanted to do something set in the '50s and had never played this kind of role before,” says Ben, who starred in Casualty from 2008 until his exit in 2011. “But ultimately I think what made the job so great was the fab cast and crew. Super friendly. Super talented. I would have quite happily stayed for longer.”

The five 45-minute episodes are due to screen on BBC1 from Monday to Friday, February 10-14.
