Coronation Street trio in Queen's honours list
Coronation Street stars Barbara Knox, Eileen Derbyshire and Anne Reid are among the TV stars recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. The three, who have all been made MBEs, are among a number of TV stars who feature in the list, published on Saturday. Barbara - who plays Rita Sullivan in the soap - described the MBE as a "wonderful honour", while Eileen, aka Emily Bishop, said she was "astounded" to receive the award. And Anne Reid - who starred as Ken Barlow's first wife Valerie in the soap and also appeared in many of Victoria Wood's shows including Dinnerladies - said she was "thrilled and amazed and delighted" by the honour. Others to feature on the list include Hollywood star Catherine Zeta-Jones, who has been made a CBE. The 40-year-old Welsh-born actress got her big break as Mariette Larkin in the TV series The Darling Buds Of May, and has since gone on to a hugely successful film career. "As a British subject, I feel incredibly proud," she said. "At the same time it is overwhelming and humbling." Others receiving OBE honours include TV star John Nettles - best known for the hit shows Bergerac and Midsomer Murders, and actress Sophie Okonedo, who recently starred as Winnie Mandela in the BBC One drama Mrs Mandela. The actress described her award as "the cherry on the cake" and added it was "way beyond anything I would have imagined for myself".
