Coronation Street's Gail Platt may have got son David a job - but actor Jack P Shepherd says he knows just how to ruin it... and her! David has no intention of being a builder has he? "No way. He only takes the job because his mum says she'll throw him out on his ear if he doesn't." Still, at least he'll be earning some money of his own... "That means nothing to him. He thinks life is all about having a laugh and he has no intention of ever doing any hard work." How's he going to get out of it then? "By doing what he does best and making life hell for Jason and Bill. He reckons they're treating him like a skivvy so he takes the ladder away when Jason on Jerry's roof." And what does that achieve? "Bill sacks him on the spot which is just what he wants." Is that it then? "No. Because Jason wants to carry on living at the Platts' he tells Gail the sacking was a mix-up and gives David his job back." So, David's trapped? "Don't you believe it. He just ups the ante. He cuts up all the roofing timbers and puts them in skips and gets sacked again. And this time permanently." Only Gail can be as determined as him, right? "She makes Audrey give him a job in the salon which is at least better than the builder's yard. In fact he thinks it's pretty cushy. He likes just sitting around having cups of tea and chatting to the clients." What is David's problem? Is it all to get at his mum? Yes, definitely. He's permanently angry with her and blames her for everything. He blames her for Martin leaving, for Richard Hillman, for Phil, for Nick leaving, for Sarah getting pregnant... for ITV bringing back Family Fortunes! Gail can't do anything right in David's eyes. Does he love her? Yes, he does actually. But the main point is that he doesn't respect her. What does he want from her? He wants a roof over his head and he wants to boss her around – which is kind of what he's doing really. Will he get worse? Maybe do drugs? I don't want to second-guess the writers because their ideas are always better than mine. But wherever David is going, it's definitely downhill. Is there anything Gail could do to change him? She could try locking him in a cell, caning and torturing him... That should just about do it!
