Angela Rippon and Nadia Sawalha have missed out on a place in the main Dancing on Ice 2011 contest after being voted out in the preliminary heats. The veteran newsreader and the TV presenter had been among eight celebrity skaters competing in the first show of the series to win one of six places in the main contest. A further eight celebrities will compete next Sunday to win the remaining six places ahead of the proper competition beginning the following week. Angela and Nadia found themselves in the show's first ever triple skate-off alongside children's TV presenter Laura Hamilton, who found herself in the firing line despite having topped the judges' scoreboard earlier in the show. With the result decided entirely on public vote rather than judges' scores for the first two weeks, the trio all reprised their routines from earlier in the show - and afterwards it was revealed that Laura had won the final place in the top 12. Angela admitted afterwards she was "gutted" not to be progressing further in the show. "But I've had a tremendous time," she said. "And thank you to everybody who did vote for me because you have been so supportive." Nadia Sawalha - who earlier in the show said she would "sell her house" for a place in the main contest - paid tribute to her skating partner Mark Hanretty. "I'm going to miss everybody," she said, "but what I'm most gutted about is that Mark Hanretty is the most beautiful skater and he's been holding me up." Five celebrities - Vanilla Ice, Steven Arnold, Johnson Beharry VC, Jeff Brazier and Kerry Katona - all won a place in the top 12 following the public vote. Next Sunday will see Hollyoaks star Jennifer Metcalfe, TV presenter Chloe Madeley, Loose Women's Denise Welch, model Elen Rivas, ex-EastEnder Sam Attwater, cricketer Dominic Cork, former Neighbours star Craig McLachlan and comedian Dave Vitty take to the ice in a bid to win a place in the series.
