Doctor Who fans have bid a final farewell to Amy Pond and her husband Rory - played by Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill - after their last episode was screened on Saturday night. The Angels Take Manhattan ended months of speculation as to the fate of the couple, who ultimately fell victim to the terrifying 'Weeping Angels' after having apparently saved both New York and themselves from their grasp. The story saw the pair ultimately saving themselves from the Angels' grasp by leaping from a Manhattan rooftop - and waking up in a graveyard in the present day. However their celebrations were cut short when Rory discovered his name on a gravestone and was promptly zapped back in time by a surviving 'Angel' - leaving Amy with no choice but to also sacrifice herself to the statue in order to be with her husband. A touching coda, meanwhile, made reference to the young Amy Pond who appeared in the character's very first episode - and urged the Doctor to find someone new. Saturday's episode was the last one to be shown before the Christmas special, which will feature the arrival of the Doctor's new sidekick, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman. The actress already made a surprise appearance in Asylum Of The Daleks, the first episode of the current series. Karen had previously said that Amy would exit the show in "flames of blazing glory", adding, "I couldn't have wished for a better way for her to go."
