Peter Capaldi on 12th Doctor's style: 'No frills, no scarf... just 100 per cent rebel Time Lord'

Where Matt Smith's Doctor had his bow tie, and Tom Baker had the scarf, the latest regeneration of the famous Time Lord could yet be defined by his dark Crombie coat.

New Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi, best known for his role as The Thick Of It's foul-mouthed Malcolm Tucker, became the 12th Doctor during the long-running BBC television series' Christmas Day special.

And BBC bosses have now released the first picture of Capaldi's character, in full Time Lord get-up - no doubt much to the delight of fans and fancy dress aficionados.

Sporting a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, a white shirt as well as black Dr Martens shoes, the look was created by Doctor Who costume designer Howard Burden.

Lifelong Doctor Who fan Peter said: "He's woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics.

"No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent rebel Time Lord."

Doctor Who boss Steven Moffat said the new era meant for a new outfit. He said: "Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over - Capaldi is suited and booted and coming to get you."

Filming for episode one of series eight began earlier this month, after 10.2 million tuned in on Christmas Day to get their first much-anticipated glimpse of Capaldi's Doctor.

Charlotte Moore, controller of BBC One, said: "Peter Capaldi's Doctor is officially recorded in history today with the unveiling of his new costume. It's sharp, smart and stylish - The 12th Time Lord means business."
