Thousands of Who fans try to phone the Doctor
Thousands of fans apparently tried to call The Doctor after his number was shown on the screen during the season finale of Doctor Who. Reports suggest that around 2,500 fans tried to phone the Time Lord after his personal number was dialled on screen. The digits 07700 900461 were shown as mankind attempted to contact the Doctor to scupper the invasion plans of Dalek leader Davros. According to the Daily Mail, more than 2,500 people tried the number before TV industry watchdog Ofcom revealed it to be a fake. One disappointed fan wrote on a message board: "Grrr - I phoned the Doctor's phone number, but there was just an annoying network message. What's the point in showing a phone number if you're not gonna use it?!" The BBC confirmed the number was not real and is one of a range reserved by Ofcom for the purposes of television. The broadcaster said: "The BBC complied with Ofcom who supplied the programme with a safe number which was inactive and reserved specifically for the use of TV programmes." Ofcom confirmed that they regularly give non-active numbers to production companies for use in film and television programmes.
