EastEnders preview: Grant returns again. Is he back for Phil’s funeral?
EastEnders favourite Grant Mitchell returns to Albert Square again, bringing with him more explosive drama, this time involving Kathy, Sharon and Phil
Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp) will make another return to Albert Square – and he hasn’t come back to play happy familes.
So, who – or what – does he want?
Grant is still grieving for his mum Peggy (Dame Barbara Windsor) and trying to come to terms with her decision to take her own life after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.
In scenes which will be broadcast on August 9, a concerned Kathy Sullivan (Gillian Taylforth) will try to comfort Grant.
Kathy, who famously had an affair with Grant while she was married to his brother Phil (Steve McFadden), encourages him to open up about Peggy.
But does he do more than cry on Kathy’s shoulder? Is he looking for comfort from her? Or does he want something – or someone – else?

Someone like Sharon.
Sharon was married to Grant in the early 1990s and had an affair with his older brother, Phil, before marrying Phil decades later.
The so-called “Sharongate” storyline is one of the most memorable in the Walford-set soap’s history.
What we saw when Grant returned in May is that he and Sharon are still attracted to each other.
We saw him kiss Sharon on the cheek – and we saw that it very nearly became something else.
Sharon wanted him and they both knew it.
Sharon’s husband Phil doesn’t know anything about it, though – yet.
So Grant’s return to Walford this time will be full of tension between him and Sharon (Letitia Dean), too.
What could that mean for Phil?
He’s on his last legs with liver disease brought on by his years of heavy drinking. Is his brother back to finish him off?
Despite what his family thinks, Grant did return for his mum's funeral. Viewers saw him hidden at the cemetery, sobbing as he watched her coffin being lowered into the ground. But no one else knew he was there. Everyone thought he had cold-heartedly stayed away.
He is not always as hard-hearted as he likes people to think.
But would he be cruel enough to watch Phil die – and have an affair with his wife while he does it?
Is Grant back to bury his brother and take his wife?
EastEnders continues on BBC1, Monday, August 1, 8.00pm
