Is Garry a real mummy's boy?
If ever a soap character needed excitement in his life it's EastEnders' Garry Hobbs - and he gets plenty of it when his mum turns up! Actor Ricky Groves reveals all... When Charlie tells Garry that Lynne's getting married again, Walford's resident bachelor boy makes a dash to the registry office. But when the bride arrives it's not Lynne - it's a woman called Hazel. Has Garry secretly been planning a wedding of his own? "No. The woman is actually his mum. Garry hasn't seen her for about 10 years and she’s made contact again with him and asked him to come to her wedding." Why so long? Is there bad feeling between the two of them? "No. They have an odd relationship but there's still affection there. She's had a string of men in her life and Garry's hoping that she's finally found happiness." But it turns out that she still hasn't found Mr Right and calls on Garry to help her do a runner. "His mum's been through a succession of men and as a kid Garry had lots of different 'uncles'. His real dad was never on the scene. Hazel's problem has always been that she can't commit and she hasn't changed. Mostly they've gone their separate ways but now Garry's caught up in this mess when he’d really rather not have anything to do with it." What happens when Hazel's fiancé Gerald spots Garry and Hazel together? "He thinks that Garry is her toyboy and punches him on the nose. Then Hazel persuades him to take her back to Walford until she can sort herself out." But Garry's isn't exactly pleased when flatmate Minty takes a shine to Hazel, is he? "Garry’s horrified. He knows what his mum is like with men and can see that Minty's fallen for her. He warns his mum off but she and Minty are getting along like a house on fire and next thing Garry walks in and catches them kissing!" Eugh! How does Garry react to that? "He makes it clear he wants her to go. He accuses her of messing up his life again and makes her cry. But then she tells him how much he means to her and apologises for all the times she let him down and Garry ends up asking her to stay!" Does she jump at the chance to bond with her son? "She's obviously thrilled but tells him that, now she knows they're OK with each other, she'll be going." What? And that's really the end of story? "You are left feeling that this is a chapter which could be revisited..."
