Martin Kemp: I still have epilepsy

Martin Kemp has revealed he still suffers from epilepsy more than 10 years after he was diagnosed with two brain tumours. The 45-year-old former EastEnder, who is now the patron of the Encephalitis Society, temporarily lost the use of one of his legs and an eye after the tumours were removed in 1995. "I suffer full-time from epilepsy, I've been on medication now for something like 12 years, but with the right medication epilepsy can be suppressed and it is in my case," he said. Martin, who formed 80s band Spandau Ballet with his brother Gary, added: "I still carry a few scars, not just physical scars but mental scars from what happened over 10 years ago. "The things that happened to me after my operation were from bruising and trauma to the brain and, thank God, most of the effects disappeared, but obviously for a lot of people that's not the case and they have to live with that everyday." Martin became the patron of the Encephalitis Society last year, to support the charity's work with the friends and family of those who suffer from inflammation of the brain. "What happened to me gave me an incredible insight into what it must be like, albeit a very small insight, into what it must be like for people who have long-term brain injury and how scary that is."
