Emmerdale's Matthew: It's still there with Alicia!
Emmerdale's Matthew Wolfenden hints to Soaplife that Alicia might well still be the love of David's life... David's a typical man, hoping that if he buries his head in the sand long enough the problem will go away. Right now the problem he's trying to avoid is his tangled feelings for Priya, Alicia and Jacob. And it's very complicated. "It's not a great time for David really. He's rather confused," says Matthew. And there's plenty more confusion to come... Does David have any idea how upset Alicia is that he's fallen for Priya? "As daft as David is, I think he kind of does know and he knows how much he's hurt her, but he pretends it's not happening. I don't think he really understands his own feelings. At the moment he's saying it's all about Jacob because he's got this new kind of son who he thinks the world of. I don't know if he even realises he has feelings for Alicia mixed in, too." So he does have feelings for Alicia! "There's obviously something there with Alicia. Even when he's with Priya, he tells Alicia he still wants her and Jake to live with him. At the moment he's saying 'I do love you... but only as a friend'. But the longer time goes on, the more that friendship is turning into love." Might David have stayed married to Alicia if he hadn't fallen for Priya? "Very possibly. It's such a sad situation. Alicia only ended up in prison because she hit Val defending David. Then the love of her life gets with the local posh girl." And is David in love with Priya? "He thinks he is. It's such a weird situation. On the one hand he does love Alicia as they're this little family unit, even if it's all a bit cock-eyed. But on the other hand, David certainly thinks himself to be in love with Priya..." Is he upset when Alicia tells Jacob she and David are splitting up? "It's horrible. And the fact it all happens over Christmas makes it even worse. There's this little nine-year-old lad and David desperately wanted to make Christmas so good for him. But nothing goes to plan." David and Jacob spent months as father and son... How's that going to work now he’s with Priya? "It's not going to work. Jacob's devastated as not only did his mum and dad split up, but now David is no longer his dad either. Jacob feels he must have done something wrong and it's his fault and no matter how much David says this isn't so, Jacob still believes it. David's very upset about losing Jacob, but I don't think he realises yet how upset he is about losing Alicia." But then David says something that gives Jacob fresh hope... "David basically says, 'Never say never', implying that things might happen. He only says it to make Jacob a bit happier. Jacob sits up and you can see him thinking that he's going to do all he can to get Alicia and David back together. He tries to cook a meal for them and gets them a bottle of wine. It all goes a bit wrong but, bless him, he thinks if he tries it'll bring them closer together." Could David realise Alicia is the love of his life? "Yes, absolutely. I think and feel that's the way it's going and it's what the viewers want. I think it will happen - but not yet!"
