Britain’s Lost Masterpieces – BBC4
Dr Bendor Grosvenor and Emma Dabiri discover two anonymous landscapes in Birmingham Art Gallery in this week’s Britain’s Lost Masterpieces on BBC4
Another week, another art mystery to be solved by Dr Bendor Grosvenor and Emma Dabiri (pictured above) in BBC4’s Britain’s Lost Masterpieces.
Bendor has found a couple of paintings in storage at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery that he thinks bear closer inspection (for full listings, see our TV Guide).
This opens up a fascinating look at the eras in which they were painted, one from the 18th century and the other, which he thinks could possibly be by the Flemish painter Brueghel, from the 17th century.
Amid the art terms such as ‘pentimento’ and ‘staffage’, it’s reassuring to hear Simon the restorer say, ‘We’ve still got to get the main gloop off this area’.
