'I do believe in my heart that this is one of the greatest expeditions left to do on the planet,' says Steve Backshall of his latest two-part daredevil adventure – kayaking 500km down the Baliem river in New Guinea.
In one of the least explored places on the planet there aren't even any decent maps, so Steve literally has no idea what is around the corner – one moment the river is calm, the next rapids threaten to overwhelm his team.
As well as battling the Baliem, Steve also meets the local wildlife and people. While the animals are predictably fierce, luckily the local Dani tribe is a friendly and welcoming bunch.
