Scott's new film can't claim to be anywhere as groundbreaking as his original. It is also messily plotted and nowhere near as scary.
However, it is also suspenseful, well-acted and packed with amazing images. There is also a good supply of grisly incidents, including a standout scene in which Rapace performs auto-surgery on herself - a sequence that will leave most viewers squirming.
Rapace proves a ballsy heir to Sigourney Weaver's iconic Ripley, while Charlize Theron, Idris Elba and, especially, Michael Fassbender, as an android who is at once sympathetic and sinister, also give stand-out performances.
