Making his film-directing debut, Dustin Hoffman gets note-perfect performances from a classy line-up of British stars Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Billy Connolly and Pauline Collins.
In this heartwarming ensemble comedy drama, set in a retirement home for opera singers and musicians, Courtenay, Connolly and Collins are long-term residents who need to win round spiky new arrival Smith for a crucial fund-raising concert.
Based on the play by Ronald Harwood, this movie is cosy, lighthearted and enormously entertaining. Smith is in typically imperious form, Courtenay is amusingly wry and Collins endearingly dotty, but it's the roguish Connolly who comes closest to stealing the show.
Make sure to linger for the credits, which features photographs of the cast members in their younger days.
