Queen of the World - ITV
Queen of the World is a two-part documentary on ITV that takes a unique look at the impact the Queen has had on the world stage
Over 70 years after she dedicated herself to the Commonwealth on her 21st birthday, this revealing two-part documentary - Queen of the World, filmed over a year, explores the Queen’s relationship with her ‘family of nations’ and the impact she has had globally.
As well as looking back on some of the Queen’s most memorable past trips with the help of her private home movies, it also go behind-the-scenes at key moments for the Royal Family from the Queen recording her Christmas message to the Commonwealth to Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall’s 2017 Canadian tour.
Meanwhile, as world leaders discuss how important the monarchy is across the globe, the likes of the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, reveal how they are continuing the Queen's Commonwealth legacy.
‘When it was announced that the Commonwealth leaders would meet in the UK in 2018, it seemed the right time to show the Queen’s relationship with these countries, which once comprised an empire and now make up a members-only club united by one person who regards the Commonwealth as part of her life’s work,’ says the writer and producer of the two-part series, Robert Hardman.
At her coronation in 1953, the Queen strengthened her allegiance to the Commonwealth by having emblems of each of the then eight Commonwealth nations embroidered on her gown.
As Meghan, the new Duchess of Sussex, looks back on her wedding day this year for the documentary, she reveals why she wanted to follow that tradition by having the flowers of the now 53 Commonwealth countries embroidered on to her veil.
‘The Commonwealth has a personal connection for the Queen and that’s epitomised by the design of the coronation gown,’ says Robert. ‘Meghan Markle had a similar idea with her wedding veil, but kept it a secret from everyone, including her husband-to-be and the Queen.’
