Danny Kaye is the definitive daydream believer in this glossy romp based on James Thurber’s famous story.
Kaye’s a magazine proof-reader who lives with his widowed mother Fay Bainter and imagines himself in the kind of heroic situations he reads about to liven up his dull routine.
However, when he meets Virginia Mayo on a train, real life becomes more thrilling as he gets embroiled in a Nazi plot to steal Dutch treasures.
Kaye achieved well-deserved critical acclaim for his versatile performance in which, as well as Mitty, he plays a sea captain, a surgeon, an English flying ace, a Mississippi gambler, a hat designer and a gunfighter and tops it all with his virtuoso rendition of Anatole of Paris.
