THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD (Nathan Juran, 1958) The film for which director Nathan Juran (he also did TV's Lost in Space and Land of the Giants) will be remembered and a huge box office smash at the time of its cinema release. Kerwin Matthews takes the title role as the fearless Sinbad who sails into troubled waters to save a princess (Kathryn Grant) cursed by an evil magician. But the real stars of this rousing Arabian Nights adventure are, of course, Ray Harryhausen's incredible stop motion animated monsters, most notably his glowering Cyclops. Believe it or not, a scene involving a sword-fighting skeleton was originally cut by the British censors as being too frightening!
THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD (Gordon Hessler, 1973) Ray Harryhausen pulls out more Dynamation magic for this second Sinbad adventure which enables John Phillip Law's seafarer to fight a gryphon, a centaur, a six-armed goddess (each arm bearing a sword) and various other weird and wonderful opponents. Caroline Munro is an eye-catching heroine, even if she has little more to do than cower in the face of some new horror. Sinbad's human opponent is played by Tom Baker, just before he became a certain Time Lord.
SINBAD AND THE EYE OF THE TIGER (Sam Wanamaker, 1977) Sinbad's escapades are more padded out than usual in this final Arabian Nights adventure starring Patrick Wayne (son of John) who, along with Jane Seymour's Princess Farah, take on a veritable army of Ray Harryhausen's special effects creatures in their attempt to undo the spell on the princess's brother, who has been turned into a baboon by their wicked stepmother (brilliantly played by Margaret Whiting). But while Harryhausen's own work is well up to standard, the back-projection work on the enchanted country Sinbad visits at the North Pole is a bit of a letdown.
