The Fortune (1974) | Blu-ray release – This madcap period comedy starring Stockard Channing is ripe for rediscovery
Indicator’s limited Blu-ray Edition (UK premiere) of Mike Nichols’ The Fortune starring Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson and Stockard Channing is out now – re-mastered and in HD
It has to be said that Stockard Channing really does deserve the top billing that she gets at the end of Mike Nichols' comedy of kidnap and murder as her own unforced clowning is a clear winner over the overly stylised performances of her co-stars.
Channing plays a spirited heiress who runs away with a married rogue (Warren Beatty) and also becomes involved with his embezzling friend (Jack Nicholson). However, when she discovers that their interest in her is more financial than romantic, the hapless pair start a series of bungled attempts to bump her off. The fun that follows really calls for the snappy treatment of Richard Lester or the biting wit of Billy Wilder.
A commercial failure on its initial release, this modern homage to the screwball comedy films of the 1930 is ripe for rediscovery and reappraisal.
