Andrew Scott aims to surprise people with The Town
Actor Andrew Scott has said that he hopes to surprise people with his work - and that they should expect the unexpected in his new drama series The Town. The 36-year-old actor - who shot to fame as Moriarty in the BBC One hit Sherlock - revealed he was drawn to the ITV1 show - which begins on December 5 - by the quality of the writing, and warned viewers to expect a big shock in the first episode. That's the work that you want to do as an actor, you want people to be surprised," said the Irishman. "You feel like it's a surprise for the viewers and it's a new thing for ITV. While we were filming, we talked a lot about the audience and what people expect now from a drama and we realised it was important we didn't patronise the audience any more." The show, which also stars Martin Clunes, Julia McKenzie and Phil Davies, sees Andrew playing Mark, a man trying to pick up his life after he returns to his home town from living in London - but things are not altogether straightforward. Andrew described the show as "more avant garde," and added, "Think of the really imaginative American TV series like Six Feet Under or Breaking Bad, those are the things that people watch. "TV doesn't have to be formulaic. And writer Mike Bartlett's big thing is that popular TV doesn't need to be dumbed down."
