The focus in this penultimate episode of Jack Thorne’s gripping drama is squarely – and uncomfortably – on Alice, Kiri’s foster mother. Lia Williams puts in a truly heartrending performance as Alice, who we learn a lot more about this week. With shocking new evidence throwing Nate’s guilt into question, Alice is becoming increasingly unhinged as tension builds between her, husband Jim (Steven Mackintosh) and their son, Si (Liar’s Finn Bennett). Meanwhile, a furious Miriam accuses a former colleague of leaking the truth about Miriam’s drinking, Tobi reacts badly when a lawyer offers his help, and the police stage a reenactment of the day Kiri went missing. Powerful, moving drama. Rating: *****
Girlfriends, 9.00pm, ITV
After last week’s shocking cliffhanger, the drama ramps up about 100 notches as highly-strung (we’re being kind here!) Carole shows her true colours during an epic confrontation with Linda. Meanwhile, at Micky’s pre-inquest review, nerves grow very frayed before revelations fly thick and fast… Elsewhere, TV’s unluckiest woman, Gail, faces work problems and a desperate hunt for grandson Ben before mum Edna thinks it’s a good idea to make some chips and fall asleep… Sue, meanwhile, is awaiting her age discrimination tribunal but after some wonderfully awkward chats with her slippery ex-boss/ex-lover John, will he convince her to change her mind about going ahead? Miriam’s Big American Adventure, documentary, times vary, BBC1
For the final leg of her journey Miriam is in Arkansas, meeting her first ever cowboy. Dan and his wife Peggy live on a huge ranch and completely believe that President Trump is the answer to all their troubles. Next up is a small town dubbed the most racist in America, before the irrepressible 76-year-old makes herself at home with a devout Christian family with 12 children. After listening to some extreme and unpleasant opinions on the way, Miriam ends her journey on a high when she meets a truly inspirational female sheriff in Texas and a gang of fearless female bikers in New Orleans.
