Unsane

Claire Foy ditches the Queen’s cut-class accent to play a paranoid American businesswoman who winds up involuntarily committed to a psychiatric institution after seeking help for the stress of coping with a persistent stalker. Magic Mike director Steven Soderbergh shot this psychological suspense thriller entirely on iPhones, which gives the action a scuzzy look that’s perfect for a down-and-dirty B-movie tale that will really give you the creeps. Yes, we really are a long way from The Crown.  ****

Pacific Rim Uprising

Pacific Rim Uprising

It’s Transformers versus Godzilla again in this sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s epic sci-fi slugfest, which pitted giant fighting robots against invading alien monsters. And, once again, the spectacular action dwarfs the characters, which is a great shame when you have Star Wars’ John Boyega in the leading role. He plays streetwise rebel Jake Pentecost, son of Idris Elba’s heroic self-sacrificing pilot in the previous movie, and he’s called upon to step into his father’s shoes when the monster threat returns. Sadly, this new adventure has all the furious bluster of the Transformers series but little of del Toro’s visionary eye and none of the low-tech charms of the old Japanese monster movies that were his original inspiration. **

A Wrinkle in Time

Wrinkle in Time

Gawky teenage girl Meg Murry (Storm Reid) has a cosmic adventure in store when she sets off with her little brother Charles (Deric McCabe) and school friend Calvin (Levi Miller) to rescue her missing scientist father (Chris Pine) in this $100million Disney fantasy based on the classic 1962 novel by Madeleine L’Engle. Fortunately, she has three celestial guides to help her as she travels across dimensions in time and space, the fabulously named Mrs Which, Mrs Whatsit and Mrs Who – played by the equally fabulous Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling. ***
