All The Money In The World
In a knuckle-biting race against time worthy of a movie itself, Ridley Scott scrambled to reshoot key portions of this true-story kidnapping thriller in time for the film’s awards season release. Hurrah for Christopher Plummer. He stepped in at the last minute for Kevin Spacey to play J Paul Getty, the billionaire oil tycoon whose grandson was snatched by the Calabrian Mafia in 1973.
Astonishingly, Plummer is so convincing as the miserly plutocrat that it’s now hard to imagine anyone else in the part. Indeed, it’s hard to see the joins in the finished movie. And it’s gripping stuff all the way as the kidnap victim, John Paul Getty III (Charlie Plummer, no relation), languishes in squalid captivity while his mother Abigail (Michelle Williams) and Getty fixer Fletcher Chase (Mark Wahlberg) desperately strive to secure his release. ****

Christian Bale plays a hard-bitten US army officer reluctantly escorting a dying Cheyenne chief (Wes Studi) and his family from 1892 New Mexico to his tribe’s Montana homeland in this slow-burning Western. Like the journey itself, the movie is sometimes a slog, sometimes ferociously violent and often starkly beautiful. ****

In the midst of the Bosnian War, five US Navy Seals take a break from their Nato duties to go diving for $300 million in Nazi gold lying at the bottom of a nearby lake in this knuckleheaded Kelly’s Heroes knockoff co-written by Luc Besson. These gung-ho guys are an anonymous bunch, but JK Simmons has fun as their drily funny superior. "I might cry," he says on hearing an underling offer a sob-story excuse, milking the pause before dismissing him with a terse: "No. I don’t think I will." **
