Blu-ray review | An Affair to Remember - Hankies out for Cary Grant & Deborah Kerr in a classic weepie
Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr star in An Affair to Remember as a wealthy playboy and a nightclub singer who fall for each other on board a transatlantic liner. They resolve to meet six months later on top of the Empire State Building; but tragedy intervenes… Newly issued on Blu-ray, this classic weepie regularly appears in lists of the most romantic movies ever made – indeed, it featured in Movie Talk’s own 50 Best Romantic Movies. Directed by Leo McCarey, the film is an almost scene-for-scene remake of his 1939 film Love Affair, which starred Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer as the star-crossed lovers. In its own turn, An Affair to Remember inspired the climax of Nora Ephron’s Sleepless in Seattle in 1993 and was itself remade, somewhat less successfully, as 1994’s Love Affair, with real-life husband and wife Warren Beatty and Annette Bening in the leads.
Released on Blu-ray by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment One.

A film critic for over 25 years, Jason admits the job can occasionally be glamorous – sitting on a film festival jury in Portugal; hanging out with Baz Luhrmann at the Chateau Marmont; chatting with Sigourney Weaver about The Archers – but he mostly spends his time in darkened rooms watching films. He’s also written theatre and opera reviews, two guide books on Rome, and competed in a race for Yachting World, whose great wheeze it was to send a seasick film critic to write about his time on the ocean waves. But Jason is happiest on dry land with a classic screwball comedy or Hitchcock thriller.
