Strictly Come Dancing professional Brendan Cole has suggested that a change to the judging format on the show could benefit the 'novice' dancers.

Brendan, who has danced on the show for 14 years, suggested that a handicap system could help the celebrity contestants who perhaps aren't so naturally talented.

Speaking to The Sun, he said, "It wouldn’t hurt if there was a handicap system, like in golf."

A handicap system in golf is when a player is marked on how they play in comparison to their past performances. It's a way to allow all players to be judged on relatively equal terms, regardless of experience.

Brendan continued, "It would be good for people who don’t come from a stage school or performance background like Debbie, who has a ballet dance history."

However, Debbie has put her successful Strictly run down to a life-long history of stretching, rather than previous dance experience.

‘I’ve always stretched and done some sort of exercise. I do Pilates and yoga, but now I have done this I will definitely do cardio as well. That’s what has let me down on the programme, having the stamina, and it’s purely lack of cardio,’ she admitted.

Brendan was eliminated from the BBC show in week four, alongside Good Morning Britain presenter Charlotte Hawkins.

But now Brendan has revealed that he'd love the chance to judge on the programme.

“I’d be a great judge. It would be the logical next step. I can’t dance until I’m 80!”, he confessed.

Brendan was originally rumoured to replace Len Goodman as Head Judge on the show, following his exit after last year's series.

He and fellow pro Anton Du Beke were reportedly both up for the role - but of course, the position eventually went to new judge Shirley Ballas.

But Brendan admitted that if was ever offered it, he'd have to say yes.

"I would love it, obviously… you’d have to do it, it’s amazing…”

Strictly continues on Saturday evening from 6.45pm on BBC1.
