Campaign for 'silence' to beat X Factor to No 1!
Music fans have launched a new campaign for a 'silent' track to beat this year's X Factor winner to the Christmas number one spot. They are urging record buyers to purchase copies of John Cage's composition 4'33 as soon as the winner's single is released. The piece, written in 1952, consists entirely of four and a half minutes of silence. It is meant to be 'played' by musicians who do not touch their instruments - meaning that the audience hears incidental sounds around the room instead. So far more than 3,000 people have backed the campaign on Facebook, which organisers hope will emulate the success of last year's campaign to get Rage Against The Machine to number one instead of the X Factor winner. In that instance, the band's track Killing In The Name nabbed the coveted Christmas No 1 spot after outselling Joe McElderry's The Climb. However Joe's single topped the charts the following week. Simon Cowell branded the original campaign "spiteful" - but did congratulate the American band when they won the chart battle.
