Original Poldark star Christopher Biggins says, like his friend Robin Ellis, he'd enjoy a role in the new series
Christopher Biggins has issued a ‘come and get me’ plea to the casting directors of hit BBC1 historical drama Poldark.
Christopher was voted the most hated man on TV when he played villainous, sex-crazed vicar Reverend Osborne Whitworth in the original series back in the 1970s. And now he’d like to follow in friend Robin Ellis’s footsteps by landing a role in the new version.
“Would I like a cameo like Robin has as the Rev Halse? Yes, it’d be fun to make an appearance,” said Christopher, in an exclusive interview with TV Times. “Ossie was very upper class so instead I’d rather play a character like a Cornish fisherman, with a very good beard and come looming in from the sea!”
Christopher’s delighted that people are still coming up to him to talk about Ossie all these years later.
"I always feel proud when people remember I played Ossie," he said. "It was a fantastic accolade to be voted the most hated man on television because the role was so opposite to what I’d done before. It had a wonderful cast, too. As a drama student I was in Salisbury rep with Robin, so it was thrilling seeing him as Ross Poldark."
In the current series, Christian Brassington has taken on the role of wicked Ossie. Does Christopher have any tips for his successor?
“I’m really enjoying the new series,” said Christopher. “I’m interested to see what they do with Ossie this time round. My only advice to Christian is to enjoy it because it’s a wonderful part.”
