Coronation Street bosses have managed to convince a Manchester Transport Company to silence their trams that run just 25 yards away from the soaps new studios.
According to reports, ITV were unaware that Metrolink would be expanding its tram route to run near their new Salford studios when they started construction on the £10million project in 2013.
Corrie bosses were said to be upset when they made the discovery that a £350million extension to the tram-line would be within 25 yards of the studios.
But after many complaints to council planners, with producers claiming the noise of the tram would severely disrupt filming schedules, a decision was made that noise-cancelling acoustic mats will be inserted into the trams – making them practically silent.
The pads will be placed under special free-floating tracks and friction reducers will be added to the rails near Corrie’s set.
‘Building a tram line next to businesses and people's place of work is not without its challenges and we've been working closely with stakeholders for a number of years now to ensure the process is as smooth as possible,’ Chris Barnes, the company's Head of Projects, explained.
He added: ‘One of the conditions to us building the new extension was to address ITV's concerns in respect of noise and vibration generated from an operational tram network.
‘Thanks to a lot of hard work I'm pleased mitigation measures have now been agreed with ITV that will ensure we do not add to the drama when Coronation Street is filming.’
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30pm and 8:30pm on ITV.
