Couch Potato Pickings - Camp Rock
On the Disney Channel tonight at 6pm
The Jonas Brothers. If you've not heard of them, where have you been this past few weeks? I have to admit that I've only just taken the time to listen to a clip of them performing their music, but I feel very well informed about their purity rings. In fact, it seems that the Jonas Brothers cannot be mentioned without sex being referred to in the same breath (albeit their lack of it).
Anyway, I'm way past being a teen myself (I'm not going to tell you how old I am, but if you look at past posts you could easily work it out), and I currently have no close associations with anyone of that age. So, you'd think that Disney creations such as this Camp Rock movie, the numerous High School Musical movies and the highly popular Hannah Montana series would be well off my radar.
So you'd think, but it's not the case. Disney impacts on my life. You see, I know about High School Musical because I've been bombarded by controversial High School Musical merchandise while on the way to pick up my groceries in my local supermarket. And, I know all about Hannah Montana, having been compelled to watch the show because of my love for Miley's godmother.
And, the Camp Rock brotherly boy band came to my attention only a couple of weeks ago when I went to see 18-year-old American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift in her first UK concert. Having enjoyed her set immensely, I subsequently went online to read more about her, only to learn that this teen talent is rumoured to be dating none other than Joe Jonas.
Small world eh? Or maybe not. Disney is a powerful brand and it's able to get under your skin no matter what age you are or who you know. And you know what, I don't actually care. I have a big soft spot for the Mickey Mouse machine.
