Darren Boyd will play a hapless football fan in a new ITV4 animated family comedy.
Warren United, which will premiere in April, will centre on chubby kitchen salesman Warren Kingsley, voiced by Spy star Darren, who juggles his love for the beautiful game and in particular struggling football club Brainsford United, with the demands of his extended family.
The six-part series, which aims to get viewers in the mood for this summer's World Cup, has been co-written by Men Behaving Badly's Simon Nye and made by Steve Coogan's production company Baby Cow and Canadian animators Smiley Guy.
It also features the voices of Johnny Vegas as Fat Baz, the manager of Brainsford United who are known as The Meringues, EastEnders' Nitin Ganatra as Warren's best pal Dilip, Morgana Robinson as Warren's moody teenage daughter Charlie, Morwenna Banks as his son Harrison, Eleanor Lawrence as his Dutch wife Ingrid and Waterloo Road's Georgie Glen as his mum.
“It’s about the two most important f’s in life – family and football,” says Warrren United exec producer Bill Freedman, who created the series and has spent eight years bringing it to TV. “This show is also about the passion of being a fan. Yes, supporting Brainsford United often brings Warren more pain than joy, but that’s what makes him a true fan.”
