David Morrissey and Keeley Hawes head the cast of the second series of BBC One drama The Missing, which has started filming.

Cold Feet star James Nesbitt starred in the first run in 2014, winning acclaim for his portrayal of a desperate father seeking the truth behind the apparent abduction of his five-year-old son.

The follow-up will see Bafta award-winning director Ben Chanan – who made Channel 4′s Cyberbully with Game Of Thrones star Maisie Williams – behind the camera for all eight episodes.

Although James will not be returning, French actor Tcheky Karyo reprises his role as investigator Julien Baptiste.

The new case follows David (The Walking Dead’s Sam) and Keeley, whose daughter Alice went missing in 2003.

Eleven years later, Alice, played by newcomer Abigail Hardingham, collapses after being found stumbling through the streets in Germany, and her return sends shockwaves through a small community.

Told in dual timelines between 2014 and the present day, The Missing follows Alice’s family as they are thrown back into a turmoil that threatens to tear them apart.

The cast includes Endeavour’s Roger Allam, Laura Fraser of Breaking Bad, and Anastasia Hille, who appeared in Snow White And The Huntsman.

A collaboration with US cable network Starz, The Missing is again written by Harry and Jack Williams.

The brothers have described the sequel as 'the other side of the coin to series one'.

They added: “It’s bigger, more ambitious, and we’re delighted to have such a brilliantly talented cast joining Julien Baptiste for a new case.”

Polly Hill, controller of BBC drama commissioning, said: “Harry and Jack Williams have delivered compelling original scripts yet again, this time with a completely new case from a different perspective. David Morrissey and Keeley Hawes are two of the finest actors in the country and we are thrilled to have them on board.”
