Death in Paradise star Sally Bretton: 'Martha and Humphrey are quite cautious.. but they're perfect for each other'
Death in Paradise star Sally Bretton on why Martha and Humphrey (Kris Marshall) are perfect for each other as the hit BBC1 drama sees a brewing romance between the pair
Humphrey (Kris Marshall) has been a romantic disaster on Death in Paradise, so fans are delighted that he finally seems to have found himself a girlfriend in Martha, played by Not Going Out star Sally Bretton.
Here Sally Bretton talks about playing Martha and the hardship of having to work in the Caribbean!
Have you had fun shooting Death in Paradise? "It’s brilliant! Quite frankly it’s amazing out there and I was thrilled to bits to be going back after filming one episode last series. It’s stunning and I literally couldn’t complain about anything!"
Viewers are thrilled that Martha and Humphrey are enjoying a romance... "He’s not very lucky in love, so the audience is rooting for him and hoping this won’t end in disaster or heartbreak. I really like Martha because she’s a sensitive, gentle creature and very well matched with Humphrey, it’s sweet. She finds a lot of his quirky strangeness and clumsiness really endearing, it makes her giggle."
This Thursday episode the loved-up pair sail across to another island for a romantic getaway, but their break is ruined when a fellow guest gets murdered... "They’re just grabbing a little bit of time together away from Saint Marie and then poor Martha is thrust into the middle of this murder investigation. Florence isn’t there and Humphrey needs someone to bounce ideas off, so Martha is his sounding board. She thinks it’s amazing watching him do his job so well. But she’s slightly disappointed her romantic holiday is ruined as well!"
Humphrey realise he’s in love with Martha, but with her time on the island drawing to a close, is their holiday romance strong enough to become a serious long-distance relationship? "These are two people who aren’t very good at leading and they’ve both been hurt before, so they’re quite cautious. They’re both very tentative and taking baby steps, seeing how it goes and avoiding any bold moves."

Did you hit off with Kris Marshall? "He’s lovely and so good at making everyone feel welcome, he puts you at your ease."
What did you do in your spare time? "I went swimming with turtles! That’s been a massive dream of mine for years and years and it was amazing. They’re 10 a penny over there, it’s harder to miss them than it is to see them!"
Are you good at solving crimes? "I’m useless at anything like that, absolutely rubbish. My husband is good at working out who the killer is, but I never know – I’m constantly surprised!"
