Doctor Who is taking his TARDIS for a dash around the galaxy again from April 15...so here's what the famous Time Lord will be facing in Peter Capaldi’s last ever series…

It’s going to be a tight fit in the TARDIS when the new Doctor Who series begins on Saturday April 15 on BBC1, as Peter Capaldi’s Doctor will have two travelling companions, Nardole and Bill…

DOUBLE TROUBLE Nardole, the lovable alien played by Matt Lucas in the last two Christmas specials, now becomes a series regular, and the Doctor also teams up with feisty Bill Potts, played by Pearl Mackie.

"I'm incredibly excited to be joining the Doctor Who family," says Pearl. "It's such an extraordinary British institution, I couldn't be prouder to call the TARDIS my home!"

Peter Capaldi adds: "Bill is refreshing addition to the TARDIS and will bring a universe of exciting new possibilities to The Doctor’s adventures."

Bill works in a fish and chip shop but is eager for more adventure in her life, which she duly gets when she meets the Doctor while he’s working as a professor at a university. The first enemy they battle are the most famous of all, the Daleks!

"I always loved stage combat at drama school so I can't wait to get on set and kick some evil monsters into the next dimension!’ Pearl says. ‘I'm not sure it will ever become ‘the norm’ seeing crazy monsters on set, but the weirder the better, bring it on!"

The Mondasian Cyberman return!

MORE CLASSIC ENEMIES... Later in the series, look out for more classic Doctor Who monsters as the Ice Warriors return. This time, the reptilian creatures are on their home planet, Mars. The Mondasian Cybermen (see pictured above) are Peter Capadli’s favourite ever aliens and haven’t appeared in the show for over 50 years, but they’ll be making a comeback for the two-part series finale. Look out for some menacing looking monks, too! There’s also plenty time travel, with the trio meeting the Romans in Britain and turning up in Regency-era London in 1814 where something horrific awaits...

GUEST STARS GALORE... One of the most frightening stories is The Landlord, which guest stars Poirot actor David Suchet. Peter Capaldi has warned fans about it already: "After watching this one, it will leave viewers very afraid of creaking floorboards!" he teases.

Other guest stars include Jekyll & Hyde actress Stephanie Hyam as a character that seems to be made of water, and The Royle Family’s Ralf Little, playing someone called Steadfast. His story is set in the future, where strange robotic astronauts, which seem to have emojis, are on the loose.

Michelle Gomez as Missy in Doctor Who (BBC)

MISSY RETURNS... One of the Doctor’s perpetual enemies is Missy (aka his evil rival Time Lord, The Master), who’ll be back after she was last seen in 2015. Will she be a friend or foe of The Doctor and Bill this time? "I’m very excited to see what Bill might do," says Michelle Gomez who’s playing Missy again. "But I’m more excited to see what Missy might do with her!"

Nicholas Cannon
TV Content Director on TV Times, What's On TV and TV & Satellite Week

I'm a huge fan of television so I really have found the perfect job, as I've been writing about TV shows, films and interviewing major television, film and sports stars for over 25 years. I'm currently TV Content Director on What's On TV, TV Times, TV and Satellite Week magazines plus Whattowatch.com. I previously worked on Woman and Woman's Own in the 1990s. Outside of work I swim every morning, support Charlton Athletic football club and get nostalgic about TV shows Cagney & Lacey, I Claudius, Dallas and Tenko. I'm totally on top of everything good coming up too.
