But can the pair flee Albert Square before the police catch up with them?

EastEnders legend Tamzin Outhwaite has suggested that Mel and Hunter Owen could flee to Portugal to escape justice over the murder of Ray Kelly.

Mel has been desperately trying to cover her killer son’s tracks - fans loved her efforts the other night to smash up the gun used to kill Ray with a tiny hammer! - but the police are beginning to piece all the clues together.

With Mel beginning to realise it’s only a matter of time before Hunter is behind bars, Tamzin suggests the pair might hotfoot it off to Portugal while they can.

“I think Portugal sounds like the most obvious place,” she said, discussing Mel’s potential escape routes. "Whether she goes there I don't know. But in Portugal at least she has some roots; she knows where she is going.

"She might have learnt a little bit of the lingo while she was there but then it is a little bit too obvious for her to go there.”

Next week, Mel is thrilled when Jack promises to help her and Hunter leave Walford in a bid to escape arrest. But Hunter doesn’t want anything to do with the escape plan.

Jack does manage to get the pair in the car, but the police are soon following…

Tamzin adds that Mel would do pretty much anything for Hunter. “It's her son, it's her boy and her freedom. Is there anything she wouldn't do for Hunter?"

Jack is questioned by the police about Mel next week - can he help her escape Walford?

We know that Charlie Winter is leaving as Hunter, but Tamzin won’t be drawn on exactly how he goes. "Well what can I tell you? Does Hunter get killed? Does he go to prison? We know he is going, but I can't tell you anymore.”

Tamzin has enjoyed her time on screen with the young actor. “I feel very sad about not working with Charlie but I've still got stuff to do with him, he hasn't gone yet. He's got a very bright future and I'm excited for him as well."

Tamzin has been back in EastEnders now for over a year, so how has she been enjoying it? “Lovely, it goes so quick really that you don't have time to think about it. You know it's been like a year and three months since I have been back and I can't believe it has gone that quickly.

"I'm having a lovely time, I love everyone I am working with and I think it is a very good time to be in this show at the moment.”

EastEnders continues on BBC1 tonight at 7.30pm.
