Euro 2008 final watched by 10 million
The Euro 2008 final between Germany and Spain was watched by more than 10 million viewers on Sunday night, according to unofficial overnight figures. The match, which saw Spain beat Germany 1-0, attracted an average audience of 10.6 million viewers - the best audience of the entire tournament - over the two hours from 7.45pm. And BBC1's Match Of The Day Live coverage peaked at 12.1 million viewers in the quarter of an hour from 9.15pm, in the closing moments of the game. Roger Mosey, BBC director of sport, said he was "very pleased" with Sunday night's figures which top off a relatively successful Euro 2008 for the BBC and ITV, considering England failed to qualify. But Big Brother struggled against the football with Channel 4's highlights show at 9pm attracting just 2.5 million viewers - though a further 509,000 viewers watched on catch-up service Channel 4+1 at 10pm. Although ITV had opted not to broadcast the Euro 2008 final, its period hospital drama The Royal also struggled with 4.3 million viewers in the 8pm hour, down from 5.1 million for last Sunday's series opener. BBC2's motoring magazine show Top Gear was watched by 4.7 million viewers in the 8pm hour. This too was down 1.5 million on last Sunday's series opener. But BBC2's Glastonbury Live coverage was the next most successful late night offering, averaging 500,000 viewers between 10.45pm and 2am.
