Film review | You're Next | Sharni Vinson's kick-ass heroine saves the day in the home invasion thriller
You beaut! This home invasion action thriller is bloody good fun!
THE STORY The wealthy Paul and Aubrey Davison’s 35th wedding anniversary dinner with their four grown-up children and their partners is a brought to a sudden halt when a gang of masked assailants wage an all-out assault on the family's secluded Missouri estate. But neither the attackers or the Davison's have counted on tough-as-nails Aussie Erin (Sharni Vinson), who has the survival skills needed to fight back…
THE LOWDOWN After being screened to great acclaim at the Toronto International Film Festival and at SXSW two years ago, director Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett’s You’re Next was quickly snapped up by Lionsgate, but for reasons unknown is only now getting a theatrical release. So was it worth the wait? In a word, yes.
If you think this is going to be another cynical flesh and blood show, then think again - as it's one of the most entertaining and well-crafted home invasion thrillers around. And it’s all down to four factors: a smart script that doesn’t take it self too seriously, well-thought out characters – especially Joe Swanberg’s nasty Drake who provides much of the film’s comic relief, some heart-racing action, and Sharni Vinson as the female Aussie Rambo, Erin. This is one kick-ass heroine you don’t want to mess with. Playing the Davison's matriarch is Barbara Crampton, who best known for appearing in the 1980s cult horrors Re-Animator and From Beyond.
Released 28 August in UK cinemas from Lionsgate UK
