From Here to Eternity | Film release – Tim Rice’s smouldering West End musical buffs up for a UK cinema release
Pearl Harbor circa 1941 is the setting, as Private Prewitt (Robert Lonsdale) falls head over heels with an escort club girl named Lorene. Meanwhile, platoon sergeant Warden (Darius Campbell) has become involved in a dangerous love triangle that begins to spiral out of control, soliciting an affair with his commanding officer’s wife (Rebecca Thornhill). As the affairs intensify and become more problematic, the impending war poses a threat to the four lovers, and their relationships.
Sir Tim Rice’s musical adaptation of the 1953 Hollywood film classic From Here to Eternity may not have set the West End on fire (it ran for six months in 2013 at the Shaftesbury Theatre), but neverthless, its a smouldering, swaggering, skilful delight, combining Rice and composer Stuart Brayson’s catchy new tunes, soapy romance, gritty melodrama, tight muscular choreography, and bravura testosterone-fuelled performances (especially in lead Robert Lonsdale), all set against a backdrop of bunk beds, bordellos and a neon-lit gay nightclub. With the musical lighting up UK cinemas from 3 July, Rice's moving tale of love and desire might just become a camp classic in the making…
From Here to Eternity is in selected UK cinemas from 3 July 2014 http://youtube.com/v/ezJm7-IOGJQ
