Now, here's a treat for giallo fans. At the ICA cinema in London this Sunday (9 January, 4pm), there's a special screening of the wonderfully perverse thriller Amer, as part of a double-bill presentation with Dario Argento's masterful 1982 murder mystery Tenebrae.
Amer is the debut feature from the co-writing and co-directing team of Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani and the winner of several international film awards. Recalling the cinematic flourishes of Italy's titans of terror - Dario Argento, Mario Bava and Lucio Fulci - this feast for the senses is a virtually dialogue-free tale of sexual awakening, obsession and murder following a young girl called Ana as she grows into womanhood. Along the way, fear, sensuality and the threat of violence are her constant companions, each lurking in her mind’s eye and waiting to take physical form.
Boasting a simply terrific score using recycled Italian movie soundtracks composed by the likes of Ennio Morricone and Bruno Nicolai, Amer is a must-see for fans of arthouse, horror and independent cinema.
Both Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani will be attending the event (which will also include rare screenings of their short films) and will be interviewed on stage by film critic and Argento biographer Alan Jones.
