Jennifer Saunders: X Factor is 'just awful'
Comic actress Jennifer Saunders has admitted that she hates reality shows and thinks they need to take a good hard look at themselves. The comedienne - who is set to star in a new BBC Two series about a talk show host entitled The Life And Times Of Vivienne Vyle - says the shows take advantage of some people. "Some of the auditions for X Factor make me weep because these people are openly laughing at people who have social problems," she sighs. "I don't mind the ones who are really out there and don't care, it's the ones that go in and you think, we're now laughing because this man is sad, or because this woman hasn't got any teeth, or she looks weird. "That's the worst. Just awful." Jennifer also believes some of the practices used on talk show programmes are questionable. "I remember watching one show where they had the camera backstage watching the person about to come on, and there was a researcher there. He was goading the guy saying, 'Remember what we said, when you go out there, you're going to give him what for'. It was so choreographed," she said. "I suppose it's for the drama, because if you didn't wind them up, they'd probably just come on and cry." The Life And Times Of Vivienne Vyle starts on BBC Two on Thursday, October 4.
