Kyle MacLachlan will be back for the sequel to Twin Peaks as his FBI character Agent Dale Cooper.
The show's star helped make the announcement with a cameo appearance at a Television Critics Association meeting in the US, where David Nevins, president of Showtime which will be screening the drama, brought him out on stage.
As David was speaking, Kyle walked up to him with a cup of coffee and the classic Dale catchphrase: "I think you need a damn good cup of coffee."
Series creator David Lynch later tweeted: "Welcome back to #TwinPeaks Special Agent Dale Cooper! @Kyle_MacLachlan returns in '16 on @SHO_Network #damnfinecoffee."
The sequel will follow on from the 1990-91 ABC drama which posed the question, "Who killed Laura Palmer?" and was set in a disturbing Northwestern town.
Kyle said: "I'm very excited to return to the strange and wonderful world of Twin Peaks. May the forest be with you."
Showtime has said the series, set in the present day, is going into production this year and will screen in 2016.
David said that original series creators and executive producers David Lynch and Mark Frost had been toying with revisiting Twin Peaks 25 years later.
Additional casting has yet to be announced and plot details were kept under wraps at the event.
David did say that Lynch and Frost 'have been very specific in promising closure, and that's exciting. From what I've seen - I won't even say what I've seen - this is going to live up to expectations and then some'.
The original series' cast included Michael Ontkean, Lara Flynn Boyle and Sherilyn Fenn.
