The first five Let It Shine hopefuls were sent home tonight after the judges dropped a bombshell about the elimination process.
The first Let It Shine results show saw five boyband hopefuls sent home this evening.
Earlier in the competition the singers were put into five different bands, and tonight the wannabe pop stars announced their chosen band names as Iron Sun, Drive, Nightfall, Neon Panda and Five to Five.
Earlier in the evening the bands took to the stage to battle it out in an attempt to win the viewers' votes.
The show kicked off with a musical mash-up performed by all bands, including hits from OutKast, Survivor, One Direction and Bruno Mars.
The bands then performed their own separate song and dance routines, and all groups received praise from judges Gary Barlow, Martin Kemp, Danni Minogue and guest judge Ricki Lake.
The judges had a tough job on their hands, but the vote is ultimately down to the public, and the two bands with the lowest number of votes were forced to perform in a sing-off.
Iron Sun, Nightfall and Five to Five all had their places confirmed in the semi-final, leaving fellow contestants Drive and Neon Panda to go head-to-head.
The bands were each asked to perform Take That songs in a bid to keep their places in the competition.
But right before the boys took to the stage, the judges dropped a bombshell about the selection process.
Rather than choosing to send whole bands home, the judges had the option to save five individual band members, meaning the five boys saved can come from any possible band.
The twist meant that the contestants not only had to perform well in their groups, but they had to be able to wow the judges as individuals during the sing-offs.
Drive were the first band to take to the stage, singing Take That hit A Million Love Songs later.
Neon Panda were next up, singing 2011 hit Greatest Day.
After the performances the judges headed to the deliberation room to discuss who they wanted to save, while a professional quartet from musical Jersey Boys kept the audience entertained.
The boys then faced a tense moment as the judges announced who they had decided to save.
Three members of Drive were saved, while the judges chose to save two members of Neon Panda.
The decision means the remaining members will form a new band, which will perform under the name Drive.
Speaking after the results were announced, Gary Barlow said: "This is impossible. Any of these bands could be in our show. I am hoping you have all learned something while you have been here. Good luck."
The remaining hopefuls are one step closer to winning a place on a stage show featuring Take That songs.
Let it Shine continues next Saturday on BBC1.
