Martin Clunes is a Mayor behaving badly!
Martin Clunes chats about his gritty role in The Town, the joy of Doc Martin and a Men Behaving Badly reunion... You play alcoholic mayor Len Robson in ITV1's The Town (Wednesday). What sort of man is Len? "Len's a heartbroken drunk. He drinks to be anaesthetised. He lives alone, his wife has left him, and I think he's terribly sad - even his cardigan is sad! He's not corrupt, he’s just an old-fashioned mayor, who knows everyone and has probably been in every house in the town." And what sort of drunk is he? "He's seen falling out of pubs at night, but he's a walking, functioning drunk during the day. He's not fall-about-funny drunk. Something sad has happened in his life and he's a bit emotionally shut down. Every part of me sympathises with him." What are you like as a drunk? "I'm generally quite a happy drunk. I'm not allowed cider, as it gives me opinions!" It's a very different role to Doc Martin. Do you worry about being perceived as too mainstream? "No, I don't mind. I'm happy to be busy. I think the thing about being successful or around for a while is, no matter how edgy you thought you were in the beginning, you become mainstream. We were never that subversive doing Men Behaving Badly - we were just trying to be funny! And there's a slight edge in Doc Martin if you look for it!" Do you think there will ever be a Men Behaving Badly reunion? "I don't know. Probably not. It would have to be the right script and it would have to be the four of us again [Neil Morrissey, Caroline Quentin, Leslie Ash] - and it would have to be really good. We nearly did a reunion until Caroline got cold feet and thought, what if it was awful? Which is a big worry. And it might be quite seedy with a man as old as Neil!"
