Little Britain’s Matt Lucas goes solo to host his own alternative awards show. Making the move from radio to TV, Matt Lucas’s hit Radio 4 panel show The Matt Lucas Awards arrives on BBC One next week (Tuesdays from 10 April). The series sees the former Little Britain star preside over a mix of comedy, music and chat as he, his mother and celebrity guests mull over nominations for various unlikely awards categories, from Most Moreish Food to Dreadfullest Football Song Ever Sung. TV&Satellite Week magazine caught up with the 38-year-old star to find out what it takes to win a coveted ‘Lucas’... This is a very different kind of show for me... It’s not scripted and I'm not in character. I was nervous about appearing as myself, because I haven't done that much before, but I think it works well. Also, Mum has just retired and I thought it would be nice for her to get out of the house. This is the first thing I've done without David Walliams, so I wanted it be very different... It's cleaner than some of the stuff we have done, and it gave me the chance to work with lots of other comedians. I'm very excited to see David as a judge on Britain’s Got Talent... He is so funny and spontaneous, and I think he'll be a massive hit on it. We have no immediate plans to work together again, but I'm sure we'll do something in the future... We are as close as ever, but just doing different things at the moment. After appearing in Hollywood films such as Bridesmaids, I'm excited by the prospect of developing a transatlantic accent... I can't wait to sound like Malcolm McDowell or Barry Gibb with that strange twang. It’s what fish sound like in the middle of the Atlantic! My next role is playing American drag queen Divine, who appeared in lots of John Waters movies... It’s in a Michael Winterbottom a film about porn baron Paul Raymond, starring Steve Coogan. Playing an overweight homosexual will be a real challenge! I'm happy to go where the work is, and I'm open to all offers... If they need someone to fill in for Phillip Schofield on This Morning, they know where I am. Actually, that’s too much of an early start for me. Leave it to Schofield. He knows what he's doing.
