Michael Barrymore arrested over party death
Former TV star Michael Barrymore has reportedly been arrested following an investigation into the death of Stuart Lubbock at Barrymore's home in 2001. A source has told Sky News that Barrymore is one of three men arrested who are being questioned about allegations of sexual assault. Police would only confirm that three men, aged 32, 37 and 55, have been arrested. Lubbock, a butcher, died after after going to a late-night party with Barrymore and some friends. Tests showed that he had suffered severe internal injuries, which suggested sexual assault. Alcohol, ecstasy and cocaine were found in his bloodstream. In 2006, police began a new inquiry into Lubbock's death, while last January a police watchdog announced an investigation into detectives' handling of the original inquiry. Barrymore fled to New Zealand to escape press attention he received over the incident and soon landed a role as lawyer Billy Flynn in a version of Chicago. He returned to the UK in 2006 as one of the housemates in Celebrity Big Brother. Public reaction to Barrymore's appearance on the reality show was mixed, but he was popular enough with viewers to take second place behind non-celebrity Chantelle Houghton - although the shadow of Stuart Lubbock's death has continued to loom over him. Since coming back to the UK, Barrymore has been mixing in London showbiz circles again. He recently attended the final of search-for-a-star show Any Dream Will Do with life coach Carole Caplin.
