The falling value of the pound has delayed a planned sequel to the hit 2014 film, Mrs Brown's Boys D'Movie

Film critics will rejoice and fans will cry: the sequel to the 2014 Mrs Brown’s Boys film has been thrown into disarray by Brexit.

The follow-up to the critically-panned box office hit Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie is on the back burner because of rocketing costs since June’s referendum.

According to The Sun, the creator and star of the sitcom-turned-movie, Brendan O’Carroll, said the pound’s fall had made the situation very difficult.

He said: “We were planning to do it this year, but the numbers weren’t right.

“The Brexit drop in sterling makes it a lot more expensive for the studio than it would have been previously.

“They will wait until the pound stabilises before they make any plans.”

The movie, based on the hit BBC One sitcom, topped the UK box office and made an estimated 28 million US dollars (£21 million) worldwide, breaking the record for highest opening day of an Irish-made film.

It was also very poorly received by film critics, with The Independent’s Archie Bland writing: “I can’t say I laughed, or even smiled, once in the whole godforsaken 93 minutes.”

A sequel was in the works, but Brendan said the situation was far from certain.

“The plot and outline are there and ready to go. We know what’s going to happen and how we’re going to do it,” he revealed.

“That’s the only way you can price it and make a budget. Other than that it’s just a question of ‘Are we going or not going?’

“We need 10 months’ notice on that and so far there’s nothing.”
