Sherlock may have gripped the British public since he returned from the dead on New Year's Day, but Benedict Cumberbatch's sleuth isn't everyone's cup of tea.
Jonathan Creek returns for a new three-part series - along with his on-screen wife Polly (Sarah Alexander) - on the BBC next month and if the first episode is anything to go by, writer David Renwick isn't a big fan of Steven Moffat's detective.
In a new mystery Alan Davies' character is accompanied by a precocious student who models himself on Sherlock Holmes and believes he has similar powers of deduction to his hero. Yet to Creek's exasperation, the youngster's conclusions are often extraordinarily complicated and always a long way wide of the mark.
"David's the world's biggest Sherlock Holmes fan," said Alan Davies. "But I think he prefers the traditional version and might roll his eyes slightly at the new interpretation. I don't know what Benedict Cumberbatch will make of it - he's a Hollywood superstar now, so I doubt he'll care too much!"
Alan Davies loves Steven Moffat's reimagining of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective, but would not be drawn on whether Jonathan Creek would have been able to work out how Sherlock faked his own death.
"Yeah it's great, but I haven't seen the new series yet!" he explained. "Our kids are four and two so me and my wife find the prospect of sitting down to a 90-minute TV programme hilarious!"
Jonathan Creek is expected to return to BBC1 in February.
