Omid Djalili wins first round of Splash!
Comedian Omid Djalili and Benidorm star Jake Canuso were the first two winners of ITV1's new celebrity diving show Splash! when the series began on Saturday night. Omid made it straight through to the semi-finals of the show - which sees Olympian Tom Daley teaching diving skills to a string of celebrities - after an impressive swan dive from the highest 10m board. Jake, meanwhile, nabbed the second place in the semi after winning the majority vote from judges Andy Banks, Leon Taylor and Jo Brand, following a dive-off with TV presenter Jenni Falconer. Saturday's show also featured Eurovision singer-turned Sugababes star Jade Ewen and comedienne Helen Lederer among its celebrity divers. Omid - who was the only one of the five to attempt a dive from the highest board - triumphed after the public votes were combined with the points from the judges' scoreboard - which he led with 23 points out of a possible 30. Former Olympic diving medallist Taylor called his performance "courageous" while Brand added: "It was like a majestic turkey...can I get married to you?" The show, hosted by Vernon Kay and Gabby Logan, will feature two more preliminary heats over the next fortnight before the qualifying celebrities go on to the semi-final. Next weekend's show will feature a line-up incluing TOWIE star Joey Essex, model Caprice, skiier Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards, TV presenter Diarmuid Gavin and Sky Sports reporter Charlotte Jackson.
