Paris Hilton sentenced to jail
Society girl Paris Hilton has been sentenced to 45 days in prison for flouting a driving ban she had imposed for alcohol related offences. Despite her plea that she was ignorant of her suspended licence - she apparently signed a document agreeing to the suspension - judge Michael T Sauer said he had no doubt she knew it was suspended. He said: "I think she wanted to disregard everything that was said and continued to drive no matter what." But Paris had earlier told the LA Metropolitan courtroom: "I just want you to know I don't think I'm above the law. I did what I was told. I want you to know I am very sorry and from now on I'm going to pay complete attention to everything." The court heard that Paris was pulled over by police on LA's Sunset Boulevard in February after she was seen speeding and driving without lights. Police discovered that her licence was suspended for three years in January for drink driving. Her parents, Rick and Kathy, were in court when the reality TV star appeared. When Paris wept at the verdict, her mother shouted "You're pathetic!" at the prosecutor. Her lawyer Howard Weitznab said she would appeal the sentence, which 'bordered on the ludicrous'. Paris must begin her sentence at the Century Regional Detention Facility on June 5.
